We’d like to thank them for supporting Jacksonville’s favorite local comic con!
WasabiCon *is* Jacksonville – and we love partnering with other amazing local businesses and groups to further be a part of our community. Our latest partnership is with the Jacksonville RollerGirls, and we couldn’t be more thrilled!
Founded in March 2006, the Jacksonville RollerGirls (JRG) is Jacksonville’s first and only all female flat-track roller derby league. The JRG have since earned a reputation for hitting hard and playing strong against other leagues throughout the Southeast region. Comprised of over 70 skaters, the JRG are dispersed among 6 teams that compete on differing skill levels: home teams consist of the Duval Derby Dames, First Coast Fatales and the Bold City Bombshells; making up our travel teams are the J-Villains (C-team), River City Rat Pack (B-team), and the New Jax City Rollers (WFTDA All-stars). The Jacksonville RollerGirls is member owned-and-operated and is based on the concept “by the skaters, for the skaters”. All of our league members are volunteers who are dedicated to promoting an action-packed, full-contact sport that is both a thrill to play and non-stop entertainment for the spectator.
Pick up a BUZZ Magazine to take advantage of all that Jacksonville and North Florida have to offer! The October issue will feature a great cover photo from the folks at Red Velvet Photography celebrating WasabiCon and “being geek” in Jacksonville. Pick it up at your local business all next month!
WasabiCon has worked hard to be seen as Jacksonville’s hometown geek event; part of our success in doing so has been by partnering with some outstanding LOCAL businesses to help support the show. Our fans love cosplay and playing dress up… and if you’ve ever considered doing something along the lines of classic Americana or pin-up/rockabilly, then Johnny Angel’s Diner is THE location for a photo shoot. Seriously: you have to check this place out. From their website:

Do you like the new Wasabizilla art that has been showing up? That’s the talent work of Brittani Crawford.
Brittani Marie Crawford is an artist, animator, and Corgi enthusiast based out of Jacksonville, FL. She earned her BFA at Kansas City Art Institute after receving world class instruction in a variety of visual arts, including 2D hand-drawn animation, graphic design, and painting. She considers herself a jack-of-all-trades and in the years since completing university has undertaken projects ranging from detailed sculpture, to costuming, painting, and video game concept art. She also has a passion for teaching and currently instructs adult painting classes, though she also spent 2 years overseas in Japan, teaching English to children.
Though she’s only been a Floridian for two years, Ms. Crawford has been very active in the local artistic community, serving as an invitational artist at GAAM (where she unveiled a 6-foot tall Charizard statue!). Her art inspirations pull heavily from the styles of her favorite anime and video games, especially the Final Fantasy series, Akihiko Yoshida, and the Dragon Age series. She considers hobby and career to be one and the same and will happily discuss chiarascuro techniques with the same passion as Bioware love interests (though Ms. Crawford will not be swayed from the mind that the only correct choices are Alistair and Fenris).
She will be set up in Artist Alley at WasabiCon this year – so swing by and say hi!
